How Encryption Works โ€‹

The Lockbox Analogy ๐Ÿ”’ โ€‹

Think of your data like a letter you want to keep private:

  1. You create a secret password (like a combination for a lockbox)
  2. Your phone uses that password to lock your data before sending it anywhere
  3. Lantern stores your locked box โ€” but we never have the combination
  4. Only you can unlock it โ€” because only you know the password

What this means: โ€‹

  • Even if someone broke into our servers, they'd only find locked boxes
  • Even if the government asked us, we cannot unlock your data โ€” we literally don't have the key
  • If you forget your password, your data is gone forever (this is a feature, not a bug!)
